Where do mosquitoes breed?

Mosquitoes lay their eggs on still water, and the larvae develop there before emerging as adults. In gardens that means water butts without lids, blocked gutters, plant pot saucers, old tyres, buckets, bird baths, ponds without fish and anywhere rain collects and stands. Some species also breed in flooded cellars and drains.

The common house mosquito (Culex pipiens) is one of the most widespread species in the UK and often overwinters in sheds, garages, outbuildings and cellars. Homes near rivers, canals, lakes and wetlands, such as along the Trent valley, can see more mosquitoes in warm, wet summers.

Are mosquitoes in the UK a health risk?

Most mosquito bites in the UK cause nothing more than itching and swelling. The NHS advises washing the bite, using a cold compress and avoiding scratching, and getting advice if it becomes infected.

UKHSA monitors mosquitoes in England, including invasive species such as the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) occasionally found at ports and transport hubs. In July 2025 UKHSA reported that West Nile virus had been detected in mosquitoes collected in Nottinghamshire in 2023, the first detection in UK mosquitoes, and assessed the risk to the public as very low. If you're worried about an unusual mosquito, UKHSA's Mosquito Recording Scheme accepts reports.

How we control mosquitoes

We start with a survey of the property to find where they're breeding and resting. Breeding water is removed where possible and treated with a larvicide where it can't be, such as a water feature or drain. We then apply a residual treatment to the shaded vegetation, outbuildings and sheltered spots where adults rest during the day.

We'll avoid treating ponds that hold fish or wildlife and give you a simple checklist for keeping water from standing: lids on water butts, clear gutters, emptied saucers and containers stored upside down.

Signs You Need Mosquitoes

  • Lots of bites after time in the garden at dusk
  • Mosquitoes resting in sheds, garages or cellars
  • Wriggling larvae in water butts, buckets or bird baths
  • Mosquitoes indoors at night, especially near water
  • Blocked gutters or areas where water stands after rain

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on the size of the site and how many breeding areas there are. We survey first and explain the likely cost before any work starts. Call 07999 935 929 for a quote.

Not completely, because mosquitoes fly in from the surrounding area. Removing and treating breeding water and resting areas on your property can noticeably reduce numbers, especially if neighbours do the same.

We don't treat ponds that hold fish or wildlife, and we choose larvicides and residual products to suit the site. We'll explain exactly what we're using and where.

Late spring, before numbers build up in summer. Clearing standing water early in the year has the biggest effect.

UKHSA assesses the risk from mosquito-borne disease in the UK as very low. It monitors invasive species and reported finding West Nile virus in mosquitoes collected in Nottinghamshire in 2023. Most UK mosquito bites cause only itching.
