How do rats get into a house from the drains?

Brown rats live in sewers, and the drain under your house is connected to them. In a sound drain they stay in the pipe. When the drain is damaged, they don't. A cracked pipe, a displaced joint, a pipe that's been cut off and never capped during an old extension, or an interceptor trap with a missing rodding-eye stopper all give rats a way out of the drain and into the ground, wall cavities, under-floor voids and lofts.

That's why some rat problems keep coming back however many times they're treated. If you're hearing rats in the walls or under the floor but can't find a way in from outside, the drains are the first thing to check. Rats coming up through a toilet are much rarer, but it does happen.

  • Cracked or broken pipes under floors and extensions
  • Displaced or open joints on older clay drains
  • Disused connections that were never capped
  • Interceptor traps with a missing stopper
  • Damaged inspection chambers and benching

What we do, and what our sister drainage company does

Urgent Pest Control treats the rats. We survey the property, set tamper-resistant bait stations or traps where the rats are active (often the loft, wall voids and under floors), come back for follow-up visits and clear up when activity stops.

Our sister company, Urgent Drainage Solutions, deals with the drain. Their engineers run a CCTV camera through the pipes to find the defect, and they can fit a rat blocker (a one-way valve that lets waste out but stops rats coming up the pipe), cap off redundant connections and repair or reline damaged sections. You can read more at https://urgentdrainagesolutions.co.uk/rats-in-drains.

One call covers both. We'll book the pest control and arrange the drain survey so you're not chasing two companies.

Who is responsible for a broken drain?

In England, the drain that serves only your property is usually yours to maintain up to the boundary. Since October 2011, shared drains and lateral drains outside the boundary have generally been the responsibility of the water company, which across our area is Severn Trent Water or Anglian Water. The CCTV survey shows which section is damaged, so you'll know who should pay for the repair.

What our customers say

“Gino reacted very quickly to our request and was also very quick to locate the source of our problem. With a non return main drain valve fitted and poison in the attic, our problem was resolved within a few days. Great value for money and highly recommended from our experience.” — John, May 2025, Google review.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Rats live in sewers and can get out wherever a drain is cracked, has an open joint or has a redundant pipe that was never capped. They then move through the ground, wall cavities and floor voids into the house.

A rat blocker is a one-way valve fitted inside the drain, usually in an inspection chamber. Waste flows out normally, but a flap stops rats travelling back up the pipe into your drains. It's fitted by our sister company, Urgent Drainage Solutions, after a CCTV survey.

If the rats are getting in from a damaged drain, treating them only deals with the ones already inside. New rats from the sewer will follow. A CCTV drain survey finds the defect, and a repair or rat blocker closes it off.

It's uncommon, but it can happen. Rats are strong swimmers and can travel up a soil pipe. Keep the lid down and call us. A rat blocker on the main drain stops it happening again.

Drains serving only your property are usually yours up to the boundary; shared and lateral drains beyond it are generally the water company's. The CCTV survey shows where the damage is. Home insurance sometimes covers accidental drain damage, so check your policy.

Water companies such as Severn Trent and Anglian Water carry out baiting in public sewers. Rats inside your property, and drains that belong to you, are for you to deal with. Report rats in a public sewer to your water company.
