Which flies have you got?

Different flies breed in different places, so the type tells us where to look.

  • House fly (Musca domestica): 6–8mm, grey with dark stripes; breeds in rotting food, bins and animal waste
  • Bluebottle and greenbottle (blow flies): larger, metallic; breed in meat, food waste and dead animals, such as a mouse under the floor
  • Drain flies (moth flies): small, fuzzy and moth-like; breed in the slime inside drains, sink traps and overflows
  • Fruit flies (Drosophila): tiny, with red eyes; breed in ripe fruit, spilled drinks and bin residues
  • Cluster flies: sluggish flies in lofts in autumn and winter; see our cluster fly page

Are flies a health risk?

House flies and blow flies land on waste and then on food and surfaces, and can carry bacteria that cause food poisoning. For food businesses, the Food Standards Agency requires pests to be kept out of food areas, and flies in a kitchen are a common finding in hygiene inspections.

A sudden swarm of bluebottles indoors often means something has died nearby, for example a rodent under the floor or in a wall cavity, and that needs finding. If we suspect rodents, we'll tell you.

How we treat flies

We start by finding and removing the breeding source: a neglected bin, a hidden food spill, a dead animal or the organic film inside a drain. Without that, spraying the adults only gives a few days' relief. We then apply a targeted residual treatment where flies rest, and for drain flies we treat the drain and advise on cleaning the gully or trap.

If drain flies keep returning, the cause may be a broken or displaced pipe under the floor where waste collects. Our sister company, Urgent Drainage Solutions, can carry out a CCTV drain survey to find it.

Electric fly killers for businesses

For kitchens, food production, shops and hospitality we supply and site electric fly killers, using glue-board units in food areas so insects aren't scattered over surfaces. Correct positioning, away from food preparation and out of sight of customers, matters as much as the unit itself. We can include servicing and tube changes as part of a commercial pest control contract.

Signs You Need Flies

  • Flies keep appearing even after you've sprayed
  • Small fuzzy flies around sinks, showers or floor drains
  • Tiny flies around the fruit bowl or recycling
  • A sudden swarm of bluebottles in one room
  • Maggots in or near bins
  • Flies in a commercial kitchen or food storage area

  • Drain fly treatment and drain advice
  • Electric fly killers for food businesses

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on the type of fly, the source and, for businesses, whether you need fly killers and ongoing servicing. We'll explain the likely cost before any work starts. Call 07999 935 929 for a quote.

A sudden outbreak indoors usually means they've bred in something dead or rotting nearby, such as a mouse or bird under the floor, in a chimney or in the loft. Finding and removing it is the fix.

Drain flies breed in the slimy film inside drains and traps. Cleaning the trap and overflow thoroughly often helps. If they keep coming back, there may be a hidden drain defect; we can treat the drain and our sister company can survey it.

Yes, for businesses. We supply, position and service fly killers, including glue-board units suitable for food areas, and can include them in a commercial contract.

Spray kills the flies you can see, but new ones keep hatching from the breeding site. Unless the source is found and removed, the problem comes back within days.
