Which moths damage carpets and clothes?
Two species do most of the damage in British homes, and it's their larvae, not the adults, that eat fabric. They feed on keratin, the protein in wool, silk, cashmere, fur, feathers and felt, especially where it's soiled with sweat or food and left undisturbed.
The webbing clothes moth (Tineola bisselliella) is small, about 6–8mm, and plain golden-buff with no markings. Its larvae spin silky webbing and tunnels across the fabric as they feed. The case-bearing clothes moth (Tinea pellionella) is a similar size but greyer-brown with faint dark spots, and its larvae drag a small silk case around with them, often coloured by the fibres they've been eating.
The adults dislike light. If you see a small moth that runs or flutters away into a dark corner rather than flying to the lamp, it's probably a clothes moth.
- Webbing clothes moth: plain golden-buff, larvae leave silky webbing
- Case-bearing clothes moth: greyer with spots, larvae carry a silk case
- Damage: bare patches in carpet along skirting boards and under furniture, holes in wool clothes
Why moth problems keep coming back
Moths go through egg, larva, pupa and adult, and in a warm house they can breed all year. Lavender bags, cedar balls and shop-bought sprays may deter a few adults but don't reach larvae deep in carpet pile, under furniture, in the gripper rod along the skirting and between floorboards. A single untreated rug or bag of woollens can restart the whole cycle.
How we treat moths
We find where the larvae are feeding, then apply a residual insecticide to carpets, edges, under furniture and into wardrobes and floor voids where needed. Pheromone monitoring traps show whether adult males are still active, and we check them on follow-up visits. A full programme usually runs over 4–6 weeks so it catches the generations hatching from eggs laid before the first visit.
How to prepare for a moth treatment
Before we arrive:
- Hoover thoroughly, especially along skirting boards and under beds and sofas, and empty the vacuum outside
- Empty wardrobes and drawers in affected rooms so we can treat inside them
- Wash affected clothes at the hottest temperature the label allows, or dry clean them
- Bag delicate woollens that can't be washed; freezing them for a few days is one option
- Keep people and pets out of treated rooms until surfaces are dry
