What does a carpet beetle look like?
The most common species in British homes is the varied carpet beetle (Anthrenus verbasci). Adults are tiny, about 2–4mm, round and mottled with patches of brown, white and yellow scales, a bit like a miniature ladybird. Adults feed on pollen outdoors and are usually noticed in spring and early summer, gathering on windowsills as they try to get outside.
It's the larvae that do the damage. They're up to about 4–5mm long, brown and covered in bristly hairs, which is why they're nicknamed 'woolly bears'. They feed on wool, fur, feathers, silk, leather and the dust, hair and dead insects that collect in undisturbed places, and they leave behind empty shed skins.
Where carpet beetles breed
Larvae often start in old bird or wasp nests in the loft or eaves, where there are feathers and dead insects, then move down into the house. Inside, they're found along carpet edges and under furniture, in airing cupboards, wardrobes and drawers of woollens, under floorboards and in stored blankets, rugs and taxidermy.
The life cycle is slow, up to a year or more for some, so a small problem can go unnoticed until there's visible damage. Some people also find the larval hairs irritate their skin.
- Old bird nests and dead insects in lofts and eaves
- Carpet edges, under beds and heavy furniture
- Airing cupboards, wardrobes and stored woollens
- Gaps between floorboards and behind skirting
How we treat carpet beetles
Treatment only works if the source is found, so we inspect the loft and storage areas as well as the rooms with damage. We remove or advise on removing old nests and debris, then apply a residual insecticide to carpet edges, floorboards, cupboards and voids where the larvae live. Monitoring traps help confirm activity has stopped. The full programme usually runs over 4–6 weeks.
Before the visit, hoover thoroughly (especially edges and under furniture), empty wardrobes and drawers in treated rooms, and wash or bag woollens. Keep people and pets out of treated rooms until surfaces are dry.
