Pest Proofing & Rodent Proofing In The East Midlands

Close The Gaps And The Pests Stay Out

We seal the gaps that let rats, mice, squirrels and birds into homes and businesses across Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Lincolnshire, including Nottingham, Derby, Leicester and Lincoln. Using wire wool, steel mesh, cement, bristle strips and air brick covers, we close off entry points found during treatment or survey, so pests can't simply move back in. Every job is quoted after the survey.

Why pest proofing matters

Treatment removes the pests that are already inside. Proofing stops the next ones. If the hole the mice came through is still open, new mice will find it. The same goes for rats from a broken drain, squirrels at the eaves and pigeons under the panels.

Small gaps are enough. Mice can get through a gap about the width of a pencil and rats through one roughly the width of a thumb. Most entry points are where services come into the building, around worn doors and at broken air bricks.

What we proof

We use materials rodents can't chew through, chosen for each gap. Wire wool and steel mesh packed and sealed with cement or mortar for holes round pipes; galvanised mesh covers on air bricks and vents; bristle strips on the bottom of doors and garage doors; and mesh and steel plates at the eaves and roofline.

  • Gaps round pipes, cables and boiler flues
  • Broken or open air bricks and vents
  • Gaps under external, garage and roller-shutter doors
  • Holes in brickwork and missing mortar
  • Eaves, soffits and roofline gaps for squirrels and birds
  • Gaps behind kitchen units and bath panels

When should proofing be done?

Usually towards the end of a treatment, once activity has dropped. Sealing too early can trap rodents inside, where they'll gnaw a new way out or die in a void. With squirrels and birds, we confirm the animals are out first; it's an offence to trap a bird in an active nest, and we check for protected bats in roof spaces before any roofline work.

For businesses, proofing is a key part of meeting food hygiene law, which requires adequate procedures to control pests. An EHO will look for gaps around doors, pipes and drains as well as for signs of activity.

What our customers say

“Gino was exceptional. Prompt in his response and visits. He was successful in clearing the pests and has arranged the property so it doesn’t have the same issue again. Pricing of the service was fair. He arranged a drainage service that we needed and this was helpful. I would 100% recommend Gino’s services.” — Victor, December 2024, Google review.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pest proofing means sealing the gaps and openings that rats, mice, squirrels, birds and insects use to get into a building, using materials they can't chew or push through. It's what stops a problem coming back after treatment.

It depends entirely on how many entry points there are and how easy they are to reach. We survey first and explain the likely cost before any work starts. Proofing is quoted separately from treatment.

Yes. Rodents can gnaw through expanding foam, silicone and wood. Gaps should be packed with wire wool or steel mesh and finished with cement or mortar.

Usually towards the end, once activity has dropped. Proofing too early can trap rodents inside the building.

Yes. We proof shops, restaurants, warehouses, offices and farms, including door bristle strips, roller-shutter seals and pipe entries, and record the work for your pest control file.
