Where do house fleas come from?

Almost all house infestations are the cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis), which lives on cats and dogs. Fleas also arrive with a previous occupant's pets, which is why so many people find them in a home they've just moved into, often after the house has been empty and the fleas have been waiting for someone to walk in.

Only a small share of a flea population is on the pet at any time. Most are eggs, larvae and pupae in carpets, rugs, sofa cushions, pet bedding and the gaps between floorboards.

Why fleas keep coming back after DIY treatment

Flea pupae sit in a sticky cocoon that sprays don't penetrate. They hatch when they sense vibration, warmth and carbon dioxide, so a house can look clear for a week and then 'erupt' again as soon as people move around. A fogger or spray that only kills the adults misses the next generation.

Treating the house without treating the pets, or the pets without the house, is the other common reason it fails. Both have to happen at the same time.

Are flea bites harmful?

The NHS describes flea bites as small, very itchy red bumps, often in clusters or lines, usually on the ankles and lower legs. Most settle by themselves, but scratching can lead to infection and some people have stronger reactions. Fleas can also make pets miserable and cause skin problems.

How to prepare for flea treatment

Good preparation is the biggest factor in a successful treatment. Before we arrive:

  • Treat every cat and dog with a vet-recommended flea product; we can't treat animals
  • Hoover every floor thoroughly, including under beds and sofas and along skirting boards, then empty the vacuum outside
  • Wash pet bedding, throws and cushion covers on a hot wash
  • Clear the floors of toys, clothes and clutter so we can treat the whole surface
  • Cover fish tanks and switch off their pumps; move birds, reptiles and small pets to another building
  • Plan for people and pets to be out for a few hours afterwards, until the treatment is dry

After the treatment

Keep hoovering daily for at least two weeks. It sounds odd, but the vibration encourages the remaining pupae to hatch so they hit the treated surface and die. Don't wash or steam-clean the carpets during that time, or you'll remove the residual insecticide. Seeing a few fleas in the first fortnight is normal and doesn't mean it hasn't worked.

“Gino came at very short notice after we had just moved into our new house and found we had a flea infestation. he is the ultimate professional, he explained absolutely everything he was going to do and clearly explained what we would Also have to do to make his visit as effective as possible.” Andrew, Google review, November 2024

Frequently Asked Questions

Flea treatment starts from £150. The final price depends on the size of the property and how many rooms need treating, and we'll explain the likely cost before any work starts.

Yes, people and pets need to stay out of the treated rooms until the surfaces are completely dry, usually a few hours. We'll confirm the time on the day. Fish tanks should be covered with pumps switched off, and birds and small pets moved out.

Most adult fleas die within 24–48 hours. Eggs and pupae keep hatching for up to two weeks, and those fleas die when they contact the treated surfaces, so you may still see some during that time.

Yes. Fleas left behind by a previous owner's pets, or brought in by visiting animals, can survive as pupae for months and hatch when someone moves in. It's one of the most common calls we get from people who've just moved house.

No. Pets must be treated with a product from your vet before our visit. Treating the house without the pets, or the other way round, is the main reason flea problems come back.

Yes, and you should, daily for about two weeks. The vibration makes pupae hatch so they're killed by the treatment. Just don't wash or steam-clean carpets during that time.
