Humane, Legal Fox Control That Keeps Them Out

We deal with problem foxes in gardens, under sheds and decking, and on business premises across Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Lincolnshire, including Nottingham, Derby, Leicester and Lincoln. Why are foxes in my garden?

The red fox (Vulpes vulpes) is at home in towns and cities as well as the countryside. Gardens offer food (bird feeders, bins, compost, pet food), water and, above all, shelter. The space under a shed, decking or a summer house makes a good den, or 'earth', particularly for a vixen with cubs.

Foxes mate in mid-winter, which is when you hear the screaming at night, and cubs are usually born in early spring. They stay near the den through spring and early summer, which is when most fox complaints happen: digging, smell, fouling, damage to lawns and chewed garden items.

What does the law say about foxes?

Foxes aren't a protected species, but how you deal with them is strictly controlled. The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 bans self-locking snares and certain other methods, and the Wild Mammals (Protection) Act 1996 makes it an offence to cause a wild mammal unnecessary suffering. There is no poison approved for use on foxes, so poisoning them is illegal. The Hunting Act 2004 also restricts the use of dogs.

In practice, for gardens and most commercial sites, the answer is to make the area unattractive and to block access, rather than to remove the fox. A removed fox in a good territory is soon replaced by another.

How we deal with foxes

We survey the site to find where the foxes are denning, how they're getting in and what's drawing them. Then we recommend a combination of measures: removing food sources, and proofing gaps under sheds, decking and outbuildings with a buried mesh skirt, an L-shaped apron of strong wire mesh dug into the ground so a fox can't dig underneath.

If there are cubs under a structure, we won't seal it while they're inside. We wait until the den is empty, usually once the cubs are old enough to move on in summer, and use one-way methods to make sure no animal is trapped. Where a fox causes a problem that deterrence can't solve, we'll talk you through the legal options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Foxes can be lawfully controlled, but in gardens and most built-up areas removing one rarely works because another fox moves into the territory. We focus on humane deterrence and proofing so the site stops being attractive and accessible.

Foxes aren't a protected species, but animal welfare law applies. Poisoning foxes is illegal, self-locking snares are banned under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, and causing unnecessary suffering is an offence under the Wild Mammals (Protection) Act 1996.

Fit a mesh skirt: strong wire mesh fixed to the base of the shed and buried in an L-shape so a fox digging at the edge hits the mesh. Make sure no fox or cubs are underneath before you close it off.

Councils generally don't remove foxes and often only give advice. A private pest controller can survey and proof the site.

Scent repellents and ultrasonic devices can help for a while, but a fox with a den and a food source nearby tends to come back. Removing attractants and physically proofing the gaps lasts longer.
