Why are pigeons a problem?

Feral pigeons (Columba livia) roost and nest on ledges, in roof voids, under solar panels, on signs and in loading bays. They can breed all year round, so a few birds can become a large flock. Their droppings (guano) foul pavements, windows and roofs, block gutters and downpipes, and are slippery underfoot.

Guano also carries health risks. The HSE notes that bird droppings can carry diseases such as psittacosis, and dried droppings disturbed during cleaning can create harmful dust. Larger accumulations should be cleaned with the right protective equipment. Nests and droppings also attract mites and insects that can find their way indoors.

Are pigeons protected?

All wild birds, their nests and eggs are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. It's an offence to kill or injure a wild bird, or to damage or destroy an active nest. Feral pigeons are included.

Some species, including feral pigeons, can be controlled under general licences issued by Natural England, but only for specific purposes such as preserving public health and safety, and only where non-lethal methods have been tried or aren't practical. That's why our approach is proofing: making the building unusable for birds rather than harming them. We check for active nests before we fit anything, and we never seal birds in.

Our bird proofing methods

We start with a free survey to see which birds are using the building, where they're roosting or nesting, and what access is needed. Then we recommend the right system for each area. All materials are UV-resistant, and fixings are stainless steel so they don't rust or stain the building.

  • Pigeon netting for courtyards, light wells, loading bays and roof voids
  • Bird spikes on ledges, signs, beams and parapets
  • Post-and-wire systems for long ledges
  • Solar panel mesh guards (see solar panel bird proofing)
  • Guano clean-up, disinfection and disposal
  • Removal of trapped birds from chimneys and lofts

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. All wild birds, including feral pigeons, are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Some species can be controlled under Natural England general licences for specific reasons, but only where non-lethal methods aren't enough. Proofing is the lawful first choice.

It depends on the area to be netted, height, access and whether guano needs clearing first. We give you a quote after a free survey.

Not while it's active. It's an offence to damage or destroy a wild bird's nest while it's being built or used. We check for active nests and plan the work around them, then proof the area once the nest is no longer in use.

It can be. Bird droppings can carry diseases such as psittacosis, and the HSE advises proper protective equipment when clearing large amounts. We clean and disinfect guano safely before fitting proofing.

No. Bird spikes have blunt tips; they stop birds landing rather than injuring them.

Yes. We remove trapped birds from chimneys, fireplaces and lofts, and can fit a chimney guard so it doesn't happen again.
