What is woodworm?

Woodworm is the larva of wood-boring beetles. The adult beetle lays eggs in cracks in timber, and the larvae tunnel through the wood for several years, feeding as they go, before pupating and emerging as adults through small round exit holes. Those holes are usually the first thing people notice.

In UK homes, the common furniture beetle (Anobium punctatum) is by far the most common. It attacks softwood floorboards, joists and roof timbers as well as older furniture, leaving exit holes of about 1–2mm. The deathwatch beetle is found mostly in old hardwoods such as oak in historic buildings. The house longhorn beetle is rare and largely confined to parts of south-east England.

Is my woodworm active?

Many woodworm holes are old. An infestation can die out years ago, leaving the holes behind. That's why we survey before recommending treatment. Signs of activity are clean, sharp-edged exit holes (old holes darken over time), fine powdery dust called frass below the holes, and adult beetles seen near windows, usually in late spring and summer when they emerge.

Damp timber is far more at risk. Woodworm larvae prefer wood with a higher moisture content, so infestations are commonest in damp cellars, under suspended floors with poor ventilation and in roof timbers with leaks. Fixing the damp is part of the solution.

  • Clean, light-coloured exit holes
  • Fresh frass (bore dust) beneath holes
  • Adult beetles near windows in spring and summer
  • Weak or crumbling timber at edges and corners

How we treat woodworm

After the survey, we treat the affected timbers with a professional woodworm insecticide, applied by spray or brush so it soaks into the surface and kills larvae as they tunnel out and any eggs laid on treated wood. Floorboards may need lifting to reach joists. We'll tell you how long to keep the area ventilated and clear of people and pets.

Badly weakened timbers may need replacing by a joiner or builder, and we'll tell you if that's the case. We'll also point out any damp or ventilation problems that need fixing so the woodworm doesn't return.

Signs Of Woodworm

  • Small round holes in floorboards, joists, beams or furniture
  • Fine, powdery dust (frass) below the holes
  • Small brown beetles near windows in spring or summer
  • Timber that crumbles at the edges
  • Weak or springy floorboards
  • Woodworm flagged on a mortgage or building survey

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on how much timber is affected and how easy it is to reach, for example whether floorboards need lifting. The survey is free, and we give you a quote afterwards, before any work starts.

Look for clean, sharp-edged exit holes and fresh powdery dust beneath them, and for adult beetles in spring and summer. Dark holes with no dust are often old. Our free survey will confirm it.

We'll ask you to keep people and pets away from treated areas while the treatment dries and the room is ventilated. The technician will tell you how long that is for the product used.

Yes. Emerging beetles can lay eggs in other untreated timber nearby, which is why active infestations should be treated rather than left.

A building or mortgage survey will often note woodworm. Lenders may ask for a specialist survey to confirm whether it's active and what treatment is needed. We can survey and provide a written report.

Small areas of furniture can be treated with retail woodworm products, but structural timbers, lofts and floors are best surveyed by a professional to confirm activity, extent and whether any timber is weakened.
