Which spiders come into UK homes?

Most spiders indoors are harmless house spiders (Eratigena and Tegenaria species), the large, fast, long-legged brown spiders that appear in September and October. Many of those are adult males wandering in search of a mate, which is why there seem to be so many more in autumn.

Daddy-long-legs spiders (Pholcus phalangioides) hang in loose webs in corners and ceilings, and are also harmless to people.

Should I worry about false widow spiders?

The noble false widow (Steatoda nobilis) is now widespread in southern and central England, including the Midlands. It's about 10–14mm, with a glossy, bulbous dark brown abdomen marked with cream patterns, and it builds tangled webs around window frames, conservatories, sheds, garages and outdoor furniture.

The Natural History Museum describes false widows as not aggressive. Bites are uncommon, usually happen when a spider is trapped against the skin, and for most people the symptoms are similar to a bee or wasp sting. Seek medical advice through NHS 111 if a bite becomes very swollen, painful or red and spreading, as with any bite.

If false widows are building up around doors, windows or children's play areas, a treatment of those areas and removing the webs reduces numbers.

How we treat spiders

We apply a residual insecticide at the places spiders come in and settle: around door and window frames, air bricks, skirting, garages, sheds and outbuildings, and in lofts and cellars if needed. Removing webs and egg sacs at the same time helps. Fewer insects around the house also means fewer spiders, so we may point out other issues such as outside lights that attract insects to windows.

“Dealt with my spider problem very well and gave some great advice. Highly recommend - good prices for a good service.” Olivia, Google review, June 2022

Rarely. The Natural History Museum says they're not aggressive and bites are uncommon; for most people a bite feels like a bee or wasp sting. Get medical advice from NHS 111 if a bite gets very swollen, painful or shows signs of infection.

In September and October male house spiders wander indoors looking for females, so you see more of them. Most are harmless and leave or die off within a few weeks.

A residual treatment keeps working for several weeks on the treated surfaces, depending on the weather and cleaning. Where false widows keep returning around a building, a repeat treatment may be needed.

Yes. Sheds, garages, summerhouses and conservatories are where false widows and other spiders often build up, and we can include them in a treatment.
