Why do mice come indoors?

The house mouse (Mus musculus) is the mouse we're called about most. It lives alongside people, nesting in wall cavities, under kitchen units, behind appliances, in lofts and in garages. Field mice (wood mice, Apodemus sylvaticus) also come into houses and sheds, mostly in autumn when the weather turns.

Mice need very little space. A gap about the width of a pencil is enough: gaps round pipes and cables, worn door seals, broken air bricks and holes in the brickwork. Once inside they follow pipe runs and cable routes between rooms and floors.

Our busiest months for mice are October to January. Mice breed fast, so one or two seen in the kitchen in October can be dozens by Christmas if nothing is done.

Are mice dangerous?

Mice leave droppings and urine wherever they go, including on worktops, food packaging and in cupboards. That contaminates food and surfaces and can spread bacteria such as salmonella. They also gnaw cables and insulation, which is a fire risk.

Clean affected areas with disinfectant and gloves, and throw away any food they've got into. Don't sweep or vacuum dry droppings, which can stir up dust; damp them with disinfectant first.

How we get rid of mice

The technician surveys the property, following droppings, gnawing and smear marks back to where the mice are nesting and how they're getting in. Kitchens, boiler cupboards, under the bath, lofts and garages are the usual spots.

We treat with professional rodenticide in locked, tamper-resistant bait stations, placed where mice travel and out of reach of children and pets. Where bait isn't suitable, such as in food areas or near pets, we use traps. Placement is recorded so we can check every point on the follow-up.

Most mouse treatments take one to three weeks. We come back to check bait take and activity, and remove stations and any dead mice we can reach at the end. Follow-up visits are included in the price. Sealing the entry points with wire wool, mesh and cement is the step that stops them coming back; we quote that separately before doing it.

What our customers say

“Gino took the time to explain everything, was thorough in the search for root cause of the problem, took the time to show us where the mice were coming from and what we can do to prevent it. 100% would recommend!” — Joanne, February 2023, Google review.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our mice control starts from £200, with follow-up visits included. The final price depends on the size of the property and how widespread the activity is. We'll explain the likely cost before any work starts. Proofing to seal entry points is quoted separately.

Most domestic mouse treatments take one to three weeks. Larger infestations, or homes with lots of hidden voids, can take longer. Follow-up visits are included, and we tell you at each one how the activity is changing.

Usually, yes. Mice are mostly active at night and stay out of sight, so seeing one, especially in daylight, often means there are others nesting nearby. Look for droppings in cupboards and behind appliances.

We only use rodenticide inside locked, tamper-resistant bait stations secured out of reach. If you have pets that could get to an area, we use traps there instead. Tell us about pets and children when you book.

Some councils offer mouse treatments, often for a fee, and some don't treat mice at all. Check your council's website. We can usually visit sooner and include follow-up visits in the price.

Because the way in is still open. Mice can get through a gap about the width of a pencil, so until the gaps round pipes, cables, air bricks and doors are sealed, new mice will find their way inside. That's why we always point out the entry points and offer proofing.

The evidence that plug-in ultrasonic devices give lasting control is weak, and mice that have a nest and food indoors tend to stay. Finding the nest, treating it and sealing the entry points is what gets rid of them.
