Local Knowledge
At Langley Mill, on Heanor's eastern edge, the Erewash Canal ends at the Great Northern Basin, where it once met the Cromford and Nottingham canals. Canal basins, towpaths and the River Erewash beside them are good cover for brown rats, which then forage in nearby gardens.
Shipley Country Park lies between Heanor and Ilkeston, on the old Shipley Hall estate, which was hunting forest from the 14th century and later mined for coal. Homes near the park, around Marlpool and Shipley, are close to the kind of cover grey squirrels and wasps like, so lofts and sheds on that side are worth keeping proofed.
Heanor's Market Place was laid out in the 1890s, and the town grew with hosiery, lace and mining, leaving many streets of older terraced houses where mice can travel between homes. Food production has a long history here too, including the Matthew Walker Christmas pudding factory on Heanor Gate; food businesses must keep pests out under food hygiene law.
Amber Valley Borough Council runs a pest control service for rats, mice, ants, beetles and psocids, cluster flies, cockroaches, fleas, wasps. From 1 April 2026, domestic, VAT included: rats and mice £115 (first visit plus up to 2 return visits); fleas £115 (3 rooms); beetles, psocids and flies £95; ants £65; wasps £70 for one nest (£85 for two). Revisits £45. A £40 call-out charge applies where no treatment is carried out. No cockroach price or concessions listed. Full details are on the council's website.
Use us when you need a quicker visit, a pest the council doesn't treat (such as working farms), commercial cover, or proofing to stop pests getting back in.
