Local Knowledge
The Cromford Canal passed under Ripley through the Butterley Tunnel on its way to the Erewash valley. Old canal lines and the brooks around the town give brown rats cover and water, and they range out from them into gardens and outbuildings.
Medieval Ripley was a few cottages and farms around a green, and the town is still ringed by farmland towards Pentrich and Denby. Where houses back onto fields, rats move in from farm buildings in autumn, and moles push up lawns and paddocks.
Ripley grew with the Butterley Company's coal and iron works from the 1790s, and the company built All Saints' Church in 1821. Older churches and houses with original roof timbers are where woodworm shows up, and they can also hold bat roosts, which are protected by law.
Amber Valley Borough Council runs a pest control service for rats, mice, ants, beetles and psocids, cluster flies, cockroaches, fleas, wasps. From 1 April 2026, domestic, VAT included: rats and mice £115 (first visit plus up to 2 return visits); fleas £115 (3 rooms); beetles, psocids and flies £95; ants £65; wasps £70 for one nest (£85 for two). Revisits £45. A £40 call-out charge applies where no treatment is carried out. No cockroach price or concessions listed. Full details are on the council's website.
Use us when you need a quicker visit, a pest the council doesn't treat (such as working farms), commercial cover, or proofing to stop pests getting back in.
